A Message From Pastor Folkes

“21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egypt—darkness that can be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. 23 No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.” Exodus 10:21-23 (NIV)

Can you imagine what the people in Egypt must have thought when this was happening? In a lot of ways, there was probably mass panic in the same way we’re seeing today. Sure, there weren’t any Costco, or Walmart, No Frills, or FreshCo where you could go to stockpile food and other essentials (like toilet paper!!!) for the foreseeable future, but that doesn’t mean that it was any less of a scary time.

The Bible says that it was dark, really, really, dark. It was so dark that people couldn’t go anywhere, do anything, or see anyone. And it was like this for three days! Now, three days may not seem like a long time for some, but if you’ve ever been sick and had to stay in bed for a few days, three days can feel like a lifetime. At the time of this writing, we’ve been stuck inside our homes for almost seven days. Crazy how quickly things can change right? Things went from, “Just wash your hands” to “Everyone stay home” in no time. Crazy! And yet, I’m encouraged when read about the plagues in Egypt. Why? Because it shows me that even in dark times, God still provides for his people. Verse 23 tells us that during this time there was still light where God’s people lived.

Today, there’s a darkness that has swept over the entire world for the last three months and some change. This darkness is felt by all of us worrying if we’ll be the next person infected by the virus or develop some kind of illness as a result of it. We worry about our loved ones who are elderly, or those who are immunocompromised. We worry about the financial safety net that we may or may not have in place. But I just wanted to remind whoever is reading this today that even in darkness there is a light that shines withing our hearts. That light is the hope that we have in Jesus Christ. Hold on to that hope and believe that after those days are over, the darkness will be lifted. Hold on to that hope and believe that, come what may, God will lead us out of darkness and into His marvellous light. But most importantly remember that wherever you go, you carry that light with you. Share some light with each other. God is faithful, and he will carry us through.

-Stay Blessed
